Theodor Müller-Alfeld (a cura di), Wien – DBG – I° ed., con biglietto autografato da Karl Zaruba ed Emmerich Zillner – 1967

Elegant tourist guide to the beauties of Vienna, in perfect '60s style, published by Deutsche-Buch-Gemeinschaft in a nice green linen hardcover with gilt letterings. Edited by Theodor Müller-Alfeld (1904-1993), the volume, after a sumptuous introduction by Albert Drach (1902-1995), well-known Austrian jurist and writer, and a series of historical quotations about the old Habsburg capital, has for protagonist 118 beautiful images – partially in color, partially B/W – of the most notable monuments and the everyday life of the city, captured by the camera of Toni Schneiders (1920-2006). In good inner conditions - except for a certain, light foxing on text pages -, the book shows a light discoloration at the spine linen, and a pair of wear points on the back cover (see photos attached). It's inside, however, that the piece saves the biggest surprise: at page 144, right at the end of the index, a pair of Austrian toponyms (Heiligenstadt and Klosterneuburg), asterisked and underlined by hand, make reference, just below, to some memory lines about an enjoyable night, spent, years before, by the guide's owner with some friends, precisely in Vienna, at the Schreder wineries in Klosterneuburg, in company, it's said, of the «berühmten Komponisten Prof. Zillner u. K. Zaruba» (that is, of the “famous composers Prof. Zillner and K. Zaruba”). Exactly beside, fastened at the sheet with three cuts of transparent scotch tape, a real souvenir of that adventure is to be found: a menu of the Fritz Schreder wineries themselves, with lots of prices, hand-written, on the back, «In Erinnerung an einem schönen Heurigenabend am 2.6.1964 in Wien-Klosterneuburg bei einem “gemischten Satz” mit dem “Rotwein mild und angenehm!?!”» (or rather “In memory of a pleasant convivial night passed on 2nd June 1964 in Vienna-Klosterneuburg in “blending” with the “red wine soft and pleasing!?!”). Just below these lines on the evidently Goliardic context of the evening, it comes the time for the signatures of the booze-up participants, among which, beside the hand notation of the first four bars of his famous Es steht ein alter Nußbaum draußt in Heiligenstadt (1940), we can find the autograph of Emmerich Zillner (1900-1971), Austrian pianist, organist, violin player and composer, already active in the fields of radio and silent cinema, one of the most celebrated authors of traditional Wienerlieder. Right below, instead, beside a wonderful impromptu on the staff dedicated to the reunion, we meet the signature of Karl Zaruba (1902-1978), other eminent Viennese composer and orchestra conductor, highly prolific author of folk music, founder of the Neue Deutschmeister Kapelle and director of the Schuhplattler Dance Band – music group specialized in the so-called Schuhplattler, popular Tyrolean dance style, for men only, in which performers jump, twist and quickly clap their hands on legs and shoe soles. The whole thing, of course, drenched in considerable wine stains! A truly unique occasion, for the collector, to get his (or her) hands on a precious, authentic witness of a funny moment of leisure among some of the greatest talents of Austrian 20th century folk music!
